Bloomington
School Band Logos
Case Study
The Bloomington Lutheran School band director, Caleb Dobberstein, needed sub-brand logos for the grade school band and the jazz band that would work within the context of their recently refreshed school logo. He wanted something that would make his students proud to be a part of their band, and that would look good on promotional materials such as polos, newsletters, table cloths, percussion equipment, and other merch.
Their school logo is a beautiful medallion of an eagle and cross against a circle, paired with a modern sans serif. I took the green and dark grey colors, font, and circular shape, and created sub-brand logos that are musically themed but are clearly part of the same entity as the main logo. The band logo cleverly forms an eighth note in the negative space, and the jazz band logo’s saxophone imitates the shape of the school logo’s eagle.
Caleb Dobberstein premiered the logos at their spring concert to great acclaim. He’s used the logos on their uniform and merch, which the students were excited to receive. Now more departments within the school have been inspired to get their own logos!
